Jewelry worn for adorning the body has been used over the last 15,000 years. There are many ways by which you can assess vintage jewelry. You can assess it as per its age, materials used and the purpose for which the jewelry had been used. However, knowledge of history is most essential while studying the evolution of jewelry of a region.

French jewelry is comparatively a late arrival in the world of jewelry. The earliest museum jewelry from France begins somewhere in the 17th century. This was also the period when France established trade relations to acquire access to gems. Though late in the field of jewelry, France mastered the techniques of both the working on metals and the mounting of gems after their sizing and assembly. King Henry IV who created a special institute in Paris to progress the new interest in floral designs provided further impetus.

Further evolution in French jewelry took place during the reign of King Louis XIV. This was the period of French regency during which Philippe d’Orleans governed France on behalf of the child king. Gems became more central than the earlier accent on metals during this period and the reigns of Louis XV and XVI. With renaissance came the interest in diamonds, gems, coral and pearls.

The 1700s also saw a spurt in fakes in diamonds, gems and pearls. Incidentally good fakes have become collector items today. In this context Strass diamonds invented by Georges Strass bears mention. A connoisseur of antique French jewelry should note the accent on diamonds in the 17th century, gems in the 18th century and fine cut diamonds by the end of the 18th century. From the above you will get a fair idea of what to look for when you buy online. Remember that the rare Georgian bracelets from 1810 used both real and fake gems. You need to read up constantly to fill in the gaps.
