Should I get a Rollei Minidigi or a Lubitel 166+?
I really love the retro look of both of the camera’s but the rollei minidigi is a digital camera, whereas the Lubitel is a film camera (takes 120 and 32 film), they are both around the same price, what do you think would be a better buy?
Depends on what you want to do, really. Do you want a small novel camera that looks cool and can take a picture every now and then, or do you want an older-style camera for serious photography? I mean, there’s nothing wrong with either, you just have to decide what you want. The minidigi is not known for it’s image quality, and the lubitel is much much much larger than the minidigi. To be honest, if you’re looking for the retro look but still want a brilliant camera, you may be better off with a decent 120 film TLR from Rollei or Mamiya. KEH stocks a few Rollei TLR’s between $100 and $250. These will give you the retro looking camera with decent optics and functionality. You could also look into the Baby Rollei, which is smaller but takes the nigh-impossible-to-find 127 film format, or you could bid on one of the hundreds of used Yashica C’s on ebay.
120 film is still easily developed at most serious labs, and it does carry much much much more detail than that 5mp minidigi, for what it’s worth. Invest in a decent light meter if you choose the film route, as it’s almost certainly not going to have a useful exposure meter in the camera.
