question about focus on an slr. stupid question but im a beginner?
first of all i apologise for the stupid question, im a beginner and dont know much
i just got my first slr (D40) and have a question about the focus,
how do i focus on the whole picture it either focuses on the things closest to the screen and blurs the background out or focuses on the background of the picture and makes the thinkg closer to the camera blurry.
how do i make it so that the background and thing closest to the camera are both NOT blurry

This is a depth of field issue. The aperture number, (lens opening), determines how much of the scene is in focus front to rear. Put the camera in A priority mode, (Aperture priority). Set the f stop number to f16. This will give you much more depth of field in focus but will result in a slower shutter speed. You may have to use a tripod or raise the ISO setting on the camera to ISO 400 or ISO 800. Do not allow the camera to select the focus point for you. Look in your owners manual and see how to set the focus so that YOU select the point for focus. Do not confuse this with manual focus. The camera will still focus automatically, but YOU select the focus POINT. Most people select to use the center point, focus with a half press of the shutter button, re-compose, then take the shot. Also, always focus on the subject most near to you. as you have more depth of field to the rear of the focus point rather than in the front.
The amount you are zoomed out on your lens can also affect things. At wider angles you will have more depth of field.
